AAUA fee hike: Professor Aboluwoye's Statement on Adaba FM.

FROM THE SECRETARIAT, ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY AKUNGBA STUDENTS' UNION, ROOM 004, ( OFFICE OF THE MASSES).

Been a response to Professor Aboluwoye's Statement on Adaba FM on the proposed fee hike.

On the 23rd of March 2018, Professor Aboluwoye on a radio programme on Adaba FM defended the proposed arbitrary fee hike in Adekunle Ajasin University. He even went further to state that it cannot go less than 100,000 and 150,000 for fresh and returning students respectively.

One would expect Prof. Aboluwoye , a long standing don of the University to be fully equipped with facts and no fictions and easy lies.

The acclaimed ''Facts" released by Dr Tunji Abayomi in the Stakeholder's meeting is currently undergoing study. However I would brandish some facts that has made the leadership of the Students' Union insisted on NO INCREMENT in what ever form.

Government have acknowledge that it currently releases 1.8 billion naira to the University every year. This figure is not shameful but also ridiculous, it simply explains our established fact that in the last five years, AAUA has being grossly underfunded by this elements, it explains why for the past five years, the Government has no serious legacy project in the University.

Out of the several new infrastructures on Campus, Government has very few to lay claim on. Infact, Government has less than 10% intervention. Save for the Senate Building, Stadium and Gymnasium. Most of the projects on campus are ETF/TETFunds project and intervention.

There are faculty buildings that were donated by individuals and groups as well. All these facts suffices to say that the State Government projects are almost non existent in the last five years. It proves a point that we have suffered gross underfunding for a long time.

Apart from the issue of underfunding, The University had run with utmost secrecy for so long. For example the University refuses to account for the over 300million naira it raised through "REPARATION FEES" less than 2 years ago. It refuses to account for the several hidden charges of over 100million on campus.

Moreover, in the breakdown of the account of the University given by Dr Tunji Abayomi, he claims the University runs on a deficit of 2.7billion naira. If the School had been receiving 3.1 billion and spends 5.09billion naira. It can therefore not be mathematically correct to say it has a deficit of 2.7billion. At worst it would be about 2.01billion naira.

However, How has the school been able to cover the 2billion naira over these years? From where did they get the money? How did they fill the gap?

Where is the breakdown for how much the Senate building consumes per day? The Management allowance? The money used to service top management? We demand for break down of all these.

On a final note. We are aware that some teaching and non teaching staffs have the illusion that a fee hike would guarantee prompt payment of their Salaries and provide better welfare, however as students of history, we must note that no where fee hike had happened and translated to automatic better welfare for its staff. OAU is a case study. There will be no significant improvement in welfare albeit a few hike.

We hereby enjoin our dear Lecturers and other stakeholders to join in rejecting this attempt to take education out of the reach of the poor.

    Signed:

    Adekunle Ayo-Lawrence ( D-gr8)

Adekunle Ajasin University Students' Union General Secretary.

    Viva Aluta.
