Alexis Sanchez has revealed that he texted Arsene Wenger following the Arsenal manager’s announcement that he will step down this summer, Daily Express UK reports.

Wenger signed Sanchez for Arsenal from Barcelona in 2014 and he shone during his four years at the Emirates.

The Chilean left Arsenal in January to join Manchester United and netted the opener for the Red Devils in yesterday’s FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham.

United went on to win that match 2-1 to secure a place in the final but Sanchez reserved special praise for his former manager.

"I texted him (Wenger) yesterday to wish him the best,” Sanchez said.

"I could not say anything on social media but I texted him and he replied to me saying thank you to me.

"It's sad because he is a historical football legend, I always said he is a gentleman and a football master, he taught me a lot about respect and to be professional.

"I'm just so thankful to him."

Wenger steps down from his role as Arsenal manager following almost 22 years in charge at the club.

During his time, Wenger guided Arsenal to three Premier League titles as well as seven FA Cups.

He can still win a trophy this season too with Arsenal facing Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals.

Wenger begins his final few games by welcoming West Ham to the Emirates in the Premier League this afternoon (1.30pm).
